Mahindra hopes to catch up with Tata Motors in EV race

With Tata Motors clearly leading the electric vehicle (EV) race in India, Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) is playing catch-up with the latter planning to roll out a range of electric vehicles soon.

Mahindra has just released a teaser video to showcase its upcoming electric SUV fleet. The video shows three electric vehicle models that are likely to be a part of Mahindra’s Born Electric Vision, its EV project. The video was shared by Mahindra on its official YouTube channel.

The three electric SUVs displayed on the video have a special significance. These EV concept cars are the first models to be designed at the Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE) studio in the UK.

Details of the Mahindra electric SUVs — along with their range — is set to be revealed in July 2022.

In fact, Mahindra was one of the first Indian automakers to have an electric car, the REVAi, in the passenger segment. Despite this, M&M went slow in the EV race.

But with the Tatas and MG creating quite a stir in the market with the Nexon EV and MG ZS EV, respectively, Mahindra has decided to join the race.

All the three SUVs come with LED DRLs (bright and low-powered lights). One of the SUVs could be the electric car variant of XUV 300.

The design of these three SUVs look futuristic and imposing. The EVs come with a C-shaped LED DRL in the front as well as C-shaped LED tail lamps at the back.

The three electric SUVs are different in size. While the smallest one looks similar to the XUV 300, the bigger one is like the XUV 700. And, the biggest EV is a new version of the XUV 900, which is a coupe-type variant of the XUV 700.

Not much information is available about the three models that Mahindra plans to unveil in July. It may be possible that when the electric vehicles of these SUVs actually take shape, they may look somewhat different from the concept.

Mahindra has plans to infuse a staggering Rs 3,000 crore for its electric vehicle plan. M&M also plans to convert four internal combustion engine (ICE) SUVs from its stable into electric cars. It is also developing four SUVs for the future.

The Mahindra XUV 300 EV, if that is what M&M comes up with, will slug it out with the likes of Tata Nexon EV that is right now the best seller in the small SUV EV segment. It would lead to a price war, as and when more players enter the EV segment.

It is likely that Mahindra will give a 40 kWh battery pack. This will generate nearly 130 Bhp of power, which is commendable for an EV.

The SUVs are expected to offer a driving range of around 300 kms or more on a single charge. That is on the higher side for an EV.

Mahindra will have to offer the electric SUVs at a competitive price, in a bid to gain presence and give itself an initial advantage in India’s market so as to compete with Tata Motors in the EV race.
