Spurred by the mega response to its Nexon and Tigor electric vehicles (EVs) and with competition hotting up in this space in India, Tata Motors is ramping up its e-car portfolio in the country with five new electric cars in a bid to maintain its leadership position.
Some of the upcoming Tata Motors’ electric vehicles are:
Tata Nexon EV
Tata Motors’ Nexon EV has gained huge popularity in the Indian market, propelling the carmaker to the number one spot in the country’s electric vehicle space. This time, Tata Motors is gearing up with an updated version of the Nexon electric that will come with a longer range.
The new Nexon variant will feature improved brakes and few design changes. The current model has Tata’s Ziptron EV powertrain technology that comes with a 30.2kWh battery pack.
The powertrain has 127bhp of power and 245Nm of torque. The battery is offered with a standard warranty of a whopping eight years!
Tata Nexon electric’s new long-range variant could be launched by mid-2022. It may come fitted with a 40kWh battery pack and be capable of a maximum range of around 400 km on a single charge.
The long-range Tata Nexon EV will be pitted against the MG ZS EV, which has a range of 412 km. The new Nexon could have a price tag starting Rs 14 lakh (Rs 14,00,000).
Tata Altroz EV
Tata Motors will also bring in the electric version of the Altroz hatchback this year.
The Altroz is set to be based on the Ziptron powertrain tech that has a permanent magnet AC motor, which is identical to the Nexon EV. The 30.2kWh battery is set to give a driving range of 250-300 km on single charge, which could be the Altroz’s USP.
Also, 80 per cent of fast charging can happen within an hour. The price of the Altroz e-car is expected to be around Rs 12 lakh (Rs 12,00,000), which is on the steeper side.
Tata Punch EV
The Tata Punch EV is also set for launch this year and could be among the cheapest of Tata’s electric cars. It is also set to use the Ziptron EV powertrain technology that powers the Nexon EV.
The small SUV is likely to use a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack, powering a 129bhp electric motor mounted on the front axle.
Punch’s EV will have an updated electric powertrain with a probable range of over 300 km. Power and torque outputs will be 100PS and 200NM, respectively.
Tata Punch EV’s price could be starting around Rs 7 lakh (Rs 700,000).
Tata Nexon BIG Coupe variant
Tata Motors is contemplating a bigger, all-electric coupe version of the Nexon. It will also come in petrol and diesel engine variants. This coupe will be on the same X1 platform on which the Nexon is based on.
It may come with a larger 40kWh battery pack that will have a range of over 400 km. The coupe SUV’s powertrain details are yet to be disclosed. Price tag may be over Rs 15 lakh (Rs 15,00,000).
Tata Sierra EV
Tata Motors is ready to re-introduce its iconic brand, the Sierra, in the country. The new Sierra will be the EV-only variant of the company. There will not be any petrol or diesel version.
The Sierra electric vehicle will come with a conventional five-door layout. It will be based on the Sigma platform that centres around the ALFA platform.
Tata’s new Sigma platform is set to be lighter, highly efficient and more spacious compared to the internal combustion engine (ICE) platform-based electric car.
So, by launching five more electric cars, Tata Motors would be sealing its top position in India’s EV space. Sierra’s price could be over Rs 15 lakh (Rs 15,00,000).
