Hyundai Motor India has said that it will launch the Ioniq 5 electric vehicle (EV) in the country this year itself. This is part of the South Korean auto giant’s plan to ramp up its battery car offering in India.
Hyundai’s plan to roll out the Ioniq 5 EV in the country was indicated earlier when the South Korean automaker displayed the compact electric car at an event in Delhi. Now, the automaker has revealed the launch year also.
The Ioniq 5 is all set to be Hyundai’s second e-car offering in India, after the Kona EV, which has already been seen on Indian roads.
Ioniq is a fusion of the two words “ion” and “unique”. It was announced as a long-term research and development project, focusing on sustainable mobility.
Hyundai has already said that it will ramp up its original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM’s) battery electric vehicle (BEV) offering in India by up to six cars by 2028.
Billed as an all-electric compact utility vehicle (CUV), Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 is built on the car major’s Skateboard Electric Global Modular Platform or E-GMP.
Coming with a sharp, smart and eye-catching modern design philosophy, Hyundai Ioniq 5 also has a host of materials inside the cabin that are believed to have been built with environmentally-friendly items.
Hyundai said that the Ioniq 5 will be the company’s testimony for sustainability.
Speaking on the launch plan, Unsoo Kim, managing director and chief executive officer, Hyundai Motor India Limited, said the carmaker is focusing strongly on electric mobility across its businesses and product range. It is doing so for a progressive and sustainable future.
“Hyundai is proud to receive the World Car of the Year 2022 for its Ioniq 5. This award is a testament of our vision and efforts to spur the adoption of BEVs globally. Hyundai Motor India has already made a commitment to expand its BEV portfolio to six models by 2028. And today, with pride we are introducing our Ioniq 5 in this calendar year in the country,” Kim added.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is available in both 2WD (two-wheel drive) and AWD (all-wheel drive) variants.
The 2WD model comes with a rear axle-mounted electric motor that generates 217 hp of power and 350 Nm of torque.
On the other hand, the AWD version has two electric motors, propelling one axle. The AWD variant belts out 305 hp of power and 605 Nm of torque.
So far as battery packs go, the Ioniq 5 comes in two configurations — a 77.4kWh that offers a maximum range of 500 km (as per the global WLTP standard) and a 58kWh one that can touch 385 km on a single charge.
The Hyundai EV comes with 800V battery technology that offers ultra-rapid charging. The Ioniq 5 can charge its batteries from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in less than 20 minutes via a 220kW DC charger.
The Ioniq 5 definitely wears a futuristic look, and before it is launched this year, all eyes will be on the pricing — if priced judiciously, it could give a leg up to Hyundai’s EV sales In India.
