British auto giant Morris Garages (MG) Motor is undertaking a major drive to spur the adoption of green mobility by boosting electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in India.
In doing so, it has tied up with India’s public sector undertaking (PSU) giant Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to ramp up the EV charging ecosystem for the convenience of electric vehicle owners.
Both the companies would leverage their combined expertise — that is, identify charging sites, gather consumer insights and create technology to manage charging systems. They plan to install EV chargers along highways and cities.
These fast-charging stations are set to also provide a host of customer amenities such as hygienic washrooms, refreshments and micro automatic teller machines (ATMs), among others.
Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director, MG Motor India, said, “For a seamless transition to electric mobility, a robust electric vehicle ecosystem is the key. MG has been developing a strong EV ecosystem ever since the ZS EV was rolled out in 2020.”
He added, “Besides our ecosystem partners, we are planning to create a mega network of EV charging stations. This is in addition to battery recycling and battery second-life solutions.”
With this BPCL pact, MG Motor would also be paving the way for electric vehicle adoption in India.
Chaba further said, “Our customers also benefit from the six-way charging ecosystem that makes use of EVs much easier. Our pact with BPCL will enhance customer confidence in EVs. BPCL’s vast network will ensure that existing and prospective customers across India have easy access to charging solutions. We plan to grow the opportunities that are there in charging an EV and would educate consumers on the environmental benefits of this.”
MG’s six-way charging ecosystem to its customers includes a free-of-cost AC fast-charger (installed at a customer’s house or office), an extended charging network, a plug-and-charge cable onboard, as well as charge-on-the-go with roadside assistance (RSA), and community chargers.
MG Motor India has installed a slew of multi-step charging systems with AC chargers and DC fast-chargers at a few residential communities and in its showrooms.
Arun Kumar Singh, chairman and managing director, BPCL, said, “Sustainable consumption is the future as we move into mass electric mobility. BPCL is setting up fast-charging corridors at major highways in India. These are inter-connecting major cities and economic centres. We will soon have a network of 7,000 conveniently-located fast-charging stations across India in two-three years time.”
Singh added, “We are excited to expand our ambit and create positive synergies with innovative brands like MG Motor India to usher in the era of best-in-class EV charging solutions. MG Motor India’s USP is creating differentiated customer experiences via its range of Internet SUVs. Also, the company has become one of the major players in the EV space in India.”
So, with this tie up between MG India and BPCL giving a big boost to EV charging infra, it could also give a fillip to MG’s offering — and in the next couple of years, the carmaker could line up a litany of EVs for the Indian market.
