Tata Motors next EV could be Altroz

Tata Motors has teased a new electric car and the big announcement is set to come in a couple of days about which model the next electric vehicle (EV) could be — and speculation is rife that it may be the Altroz or an SUV.

The teaser does not name the EV and there is speculation that the Tata group may come up with at least one of the three models — the upgraded Tata Nexon, the upgraded Tata Tigor or the Tata Altroz EV.

The teaser comes with the tagline “different is electrifying” and showcases different body parts of the to-be-revealed electric car.

Tata Motors Altroz.

In case it is the Altroz EV, it could come for around Rs 12 lakh (Rs 12,00,000) and the high-end model may carry a price tag of Rs 15 lakh (15,00,000).

The following are likely to be its key highlights (If it is the Altroz):

Engine and specification:

The Tata Altroz EV could have the same battery pack used in the current model of the Nexon. However, it may come with a different power output and driving range, which could be a commendable 300 km on a single charge.

So, when revealed, it will come with the updated Ziptron technology from the Tata stable. This is the same technology that propels the Tata Nexon EV. The Tata Altroz concept was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019.

Exterior design:

Compared to the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Altroz, the EV variant could have a redesigned air dam, a new grille, a fresh teal blue colour and electric blue accents all over. There could be no exhaust pipe at the rear.

Interior and features:

The interiors of the Tata Altroz EV are expected to see minimum changes. The only change could be the absence of any mechanical gearbox and this is going to result in more space around the centre console.

Seating capacity:

The Tata Altroz EV, if unveiled, could come with a seating capacity of five.

The Tata group had said that it would come up with the Altroz “at the right time,” and hence, there is strong reason to believe that the teaser is of the Altroz.

Or, could it be Tata Nexon?

In the teaser, we can get a cursory look at the Tata EV’s body. Earlier, there was buzz that an upgraded Tata Nexon EV would be rolled out on April 6 and this version would come with a higher range and more power.

In fact, many strongly believe that the teaser could be the upgraded 2022 Tata Nexon electric vehicle. The new Nexon EV was tested on the road and offers around 400 km on a single charge, having a 40kWh battery.

Tata Tigor, may be

A new Tigor EV is also on Tata’s radar. The upcoming electric Tigor (if unveiled) is set to be more powerful and is believed to be coming with a bigger battery pack and a higher driving range.

The current Tigor EV delivers a range of 305 km. In case a new Tigor e-car is unveiled, the range could be ramped up to 365-400 km.

Conclusion

If the next e-car is the Altroz, it would help Tata Motors get a firm grip in the domestic EV space as the company would not only have the highest sales — courtesy the Nexon — but e-car buyers would also get a wider choice.
