Tata Motors is in the fast lane to bring out many electric vehicles (EVs), and in the process, it has unveiled its new electric SUV Avinya — a concept from which cars will roll out in 2025.
Tata Motors has said that this is a mega stride towards the next generation of electric vehicles by Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM).
The battery of the Avinya concept will have an ultra-fast charge capability. It will be capable of delivering 500 km on a single charge and charging can be done in under 30 minutes.
N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons as well as Tata Motors, said, “While we were making the Avinya concept a reality, the plan was to offer a like-no-other mobility solution — a state-of-the-art software on wheels, which is not only well designed but sustainable and reduces the earth’s carbon footprint. Green mobility is at the nucleus of TPEM. Also, the Avinya concept is the perfect reflection of what we stand for. This is a creation that will not only accelerate the adoption of EVs but also lead this movement.”
He added, “Furthermore, at the Tata group, we are uniquely placed to bring all the expertise necessary to build these mobility solutions. We are confident that in the years to come, we will make a larger and more sustainable impact in India and globally also.”
Shailesh Chandra, managing director, TPEM, said, “It is a matter of pride for us to present the Avinya concept to the world, a vision that signals a ‘new paradigm’. The Avinya is not only a concept but is our new identity, an identity that will challenge the status quo. The Avinya concept is based on our first idea built on our Pure EV Gen 3 platform. This is enabling us to produce globally-competitive EVs.”
The Tata Avinya EV concept is based on its Gen 3 platform that has been developed ground up and there is no space here for combustion engine versions. The Avinya concept EV has been inspired by a catamaran. It has a next gen, smart and bold look.
The Avinya concept comes with a flexible design, boasting of next-generation connectivity, advanced driver assistance systems as well as enhanced performance and efficiency.
The architecture is built with next-gen materials, efficient electronic componentry and energy-management strategies and algorithms, all for efficiency management.
Light-weight materials are used, and the concept has an optimised structure for an EV-only powertrain.
The Avinya EV comes with “appropriate stiffness” that helps minimise the overall mass, leading to good weight management.
The new platform is designed to support a range of body styles. This EV-specific platform paves the way for Tata Motors to maximise the space between axles for a spacious cabin.
With a length of 4.3 metres, the Avinya has almost the same length as the Hyundai Creta but a tad shorter than the Volkswagen’s Vento.
Also, the expansive wheelbase permits the Avinya concept to offer more interior space.
Among a notable feature is the screen inside the Avinya concept, which is the digital driver’s display that is attached to the steering wheel. There is also the slim widescreen display atop the floating dashboard design.
The only other displays are mounted on the A-pillars that showcase the feed from the rear-view cameras. These cameras replace the conventional outside rear-view mirrors.
Tata Motors plans a portfolio of 10 EVs in the next five years in various body styles, offering a range of options at varied price points.
“This concept is a mixology of the best of the worlds. It is a vehicle that comes with the essence of a premium hatchback along with the luxuries and versatility of an SUV. It also has the space and functionality of an MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). These are all put together to create something new and beautiful,” the company said in a statement.
After unveiling the Curvv concept just a few days ago, Tata Motors is moving in the fast lane to roll out EVs under the Avinya concept by 2025 and this will surely help the Tatas reap tremendous benefits.
