Mercedes-Benz’s Vision EQXX does 1,000 km on a single charge again!

German luxury car giant Mercedes-Benz’s Vision EQXX electric vehicle (EV) has pipped its own efficiency record in real-situation driving by doing a whopping over 1,000 km in a single battery charge again!

After an unprecedented drive from Stuttgart (Germany) to Cassis (France) in April, this prototype sedan has achieved 1,200 km by travelling from Stuttgart to Silverstone in the UK on a single charge recently.

Mercedes-Benz’s Vision EQXX does 1,000 km on a single charge again!

The EV was welcomed by Formula experts, who had helped develop its advanced drivetrain.

In Silverstone, the Vision EQXX was welcomed by Nyck de Vries, the Dutchman who races for the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team.

He took the EQXX on the iconic British racetrack and touched the maximum speed limit of 140 km to an hour. Vries completed 11 laps.

Throughout the road trip, the Vision EQXX leveraged its innovative thermal management system to achieve an average consumption of 8.3 kWh per 100 km.

This was in the backdrop of heavy traffic and summer temperatures.

Markus Schafer, Board member of Mercedes-Benz Group as well as chief technology officer (CTO) of development and procurement, said, “Our journey continues, even further, even more efficiently!”

He added, “Again, the Vision EQXX has shown it can surpass 1,000 km on a single charge. This time, it was faced with a real-world situation. As Mercedes-Benz eyes going all-electric by 2030, it is important to show what can be achieved in real terms via a combination of cutting-edge technology, teamwork as well as determination.”

During this latest journey, the main challenges were the soaring temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius and the high volume of traffic in the vicinity of Stuttgart as well as the southeast of England.

Mercedes-Benz had stressed on high efficiency of the electric drive unit and this resulted in minimal generation of waste heat.

This aids in keeping the thermal management system small and lightweight.

Vision EQXX is undoubtedly the most efficient vehicle that Mercedes-Benz has ever built.

It has an efficiency of 28.320 BTU/60 miles (8.3 kWh/100 km) as well as a mind-blowing thermal management system that proves useful during long-distance drives.

The 1,000 km-plus journey was successfully undertaken, thanks to Vision EQXX’s battery.

It weighs 30 per cent less than its rivals’ batteries and comes with ‘state-of-the-art silicon anodes’ along with ‘ultra-lightweight materials from Formula One’.

These boost battery performance manifold, giving it improved capacity.

One of the distinct features of Mercedes’ luxury EV concept is its 117-cell solar panel roof. This charges the ancillary systems in the car, paving the way for extra range.

Mercedes has said that during ideal conditions, the solar roof can offer an additional range of 15 miles or 25 km.

The soaring ambient temperatures and the high-volume traffic called for cooling of the electric drivetrain and passenger cabin. But the on-demand cooling system did its job well, with no significant impact on range.

With Mercedes-Benz successfully doing over 1,000 km on a single charge on two occasions with the Vision EQXX, and with its incredible performance and features, it could become one of the top luxury electric vehicles globally.
