MG4, most technologically-advanced EV offering from Morris Garages, to launch in UK

British car giant Morris Garages (MG Motor) is rolling out its all-electric long hatchback, the MG4, in the UK soon, and as per the company, this would be its most technologically-advanced electric vehicle (EV) offering.

According to MG, the electric vehicle is based on its Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) and would come at a starting price of £26,000 (Rs 24.9 lakh or Rs 24,90,682).

MG4 will be an affordable EV in Europe.

The platform has been developed by Morris Garages parent in China, that is, Shanghai-based SAIC Motor. Recently, the MG4 completed an endurance test covering 120,000 km.

At this price, the MG4 would become one of the most-affordable EVs in Europe. It would be available in six colours, that is, Arctic White, Holborn Blue, Black Pearl and Dynamic Red. Two new colours — Camden Grey and Volcano Orange  will be added.

Here are some of the highlights of the MG4 EV:

Specifications

The five-door hatchback will be initially available in 164.7 bhp and 198.2 bhp formats with a single-motor rear-wheel powertrain.

Then, we may see a more powerful 436.9 bhp variant that would come with a two-motor and a four-wheel powertrain.

According to MG, the standard range revs up from 0 to 100 km per hour in less than 4 seconds, an amazing feat!

MG Motor has said that the 164.7 bhp variant — with a 51 kWh (thin) battery — has a range of 350 km on a single charge where the battery is only 11 cm high. The 198 bhp version has a battery pack of 64 kWh and a claimed range of 450 km.

The 64 kWh battery can also charge up to 135 kW. This indicates that in a charge time of 35 minutes, it can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent using a 150 kW DC rapid charger.

Features

On the interior, the long hatchback comes with hi-tech features such as a 10.25-inch floating infotainment screen. It also has a 7-inch driver display with Apple CarPlay/Android auto connectivity.

The car also features automatic LED headlights and rear lights, rear parking sensors, 17-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control and MG iSmart app connectivity.

MG Motor recently launched its ZS all-electric SUV in India and has hybrid options available in its Hector brand.

The company has plans to launch an all-electric small car in India and the roll out of the MG4 EV in Europe has propelled this view.

There is buzz that MG may be working on affordable EVs for all its regions in a bid to boost volumes.

Design

The MG4 EV comes with sharper lines, modern and smart headlamps as well as an aggressive bumper design.

At the rare, the hatch has a pair of crisp and slim-looking brake LED lamps. The sides have contrasting skirts and come with a smooth and flowy design running towards the back.

Conclusion

The MG4 EV may be the most technologically-advanced car from MG stable, and it may be one of the cheapest e-cars in Europe, but if wants to bring the EV into emerging markets like India, it would be a premium offering at this price point.
