We have seen Tata Motors unveiling the Curvv and Avinya EV concepts in the recent past, and now, it clearly wants to stay on top in India’s electric vehicle (EV) space in the long term by launching 10 electric cars over a period of five years.
Shailesh Chandra, who is president of the passenger vehicles unit at Tata Motors, reiterated the company’s ambitious plans in India’s EV market.

Even now, Tata Motors has the biggest pie in India’s electric car segment with around 80 per cent market share.
But with almost all carmakers foraying into the EV space, Tata Motors’ market share may go down in the medium term but it would still rule India’s electric vehicle space even in the long term.
The company believes that the fall in market share would be compensated by the additional volumes as demand for EVs would skyrocket in the next few years.
This would give all auto majors an opportunity to make a mark in the EV segment.
Tata Motors sells two electric vehicles in the Indian market now – the Tigor and Nexon EVs.
The Tigor e-car comes at a starting price of Rs 12.49 lakh (Rs 12,49,000) while the Nexon electric SUV’s prices start from Rs 14.99 lakh (Rs 14,99,000).
The company recently launched two new versions of the Nexon in the Indian market — The Max, which comes with a higher range of 473 km on a single charge. And, in the latest move, it rolled out the Nexon Prime.
The Prime mostly has features of the Max, compared to the first Nexon variant, the Standard. In the coming months, Tata Motors is expected to launch the electrified version of the Altroz premium hatchback in India.

Tata Motors had displayed the Altroz concept at the Auto Expo in 2020 and also started testing the car on the road.
There is also buzz that Tata Motors is working on an all-electric car that would be based on the Punch mini-SUV.
The Tata Punch EV — as and when it goes into production — could be priced starting Rs 10 lakh (Rs 10,00,000) or even lower.
Tata Motors will also roll out a production version, based on the Curvv concept, in three years, with a likely range of over 400 km on a single charge.
The EV may be christened the Curvv Coupe SUV. It would be based on Tata Motors’ X1 platform, which supports the Nexon range.
There has been some modification in the platform to accommodate the bigger model along with different battery packs.
Meanwhile, the Avinya concept-based Born Electric car could be rolled out in 2025.
It would be Tatas’ first concept model that would be based on the company’s GEN 3 architecture, named ‘Born Electric’. One advantage of this architecture is that it supports multiple body styles.
Tata Motors may be gearing up to bring back the Sierra brand into the market again, most probably in its EV form, and it would be based on the company’s SIGMA platform. The auto giant had also showcased the Sierra concept during the 2020 Auto Expo.
So, by reviving the Sierra brand, and rolling out vehicles based on the Curvv and Avinya concepts depict that Tata Motors is the most active player in India’s EV space, and surely, it would not lose its pole position to rivals, even in the long term.
