Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 860-km range EV is made in India

Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 has just become the first electric vehicle (EV) to be assembled in India and with the launch of this made-in-India 860-km range car, it is yet another milestone in India’s EV journey.

This Mercedes-Benz EV has been rolled out from the Chakan facility in Maharashtra and is set to pave the way for many more assembly of luxury electric cars in India in the near future.

The EQS 580 is the first luxury electric car to be made in India and the EV has been rolled out at a price of Rs 1.55 crore (Rs 15.5 million), which could see many high-net worth individuals (HNIs) opt for it.

EVs are beneficial for mass-market buyers because they save on operation costs and offer a comfortable drive but luxury vehicle buyers would want to migrate due to the seamless experience factor and because the government has set stringent deadlines.

Mercedes-Benz has opened bookings for the EQS 580 with an amount of Rs 25 lakh (Rs 2.5 million).

The EQS 580 will slug it out with the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT, among other luxury electric vehicles.

This is Merc’s third EV launch in India and comes days after the AMG version of the EQS 53 was rolled out in the country.

Local assembly of the EQS 580 — which Mercedes is doing for the first time outside Germany — is being done to keep the price down to even below the S-Class luxury sedan.

Mercedes EQS 580 is its 14th model to be made locally in India. Merc also has ambitious India plans for its EVs and is targeting 25 per cent of its vehicles to be electric in the next five years.

An upbeat Martin Schwenk, managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO), Mercedes-Benz India, said, “India has become the first country outside the headquarters in Germany to manufacture the EQS 580 4MATIC. This clearly indicates Mercedes-Benz’s deep customer commitment and long-term vision for developing the luxury EV market in the country.”

The Mercedes EQS 580 was rolled out globally last year. It is the electric avatar of the S Class that had won the ‘World Car of the Year’ award for being the best luxury car.

According to the company, the EQS is the world’s “best luxury electric car” because of its luxury and performance credentials as well as zero-emission technology.

The Mercedes EQS 580 is offered with a 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and a four-motor set up with a motor on each axle. Mercedes claims the EQS 580 will come with a range of up to 857 km on a single charge as per ARAI standards.

So far as the range goes, it will be the only electric vehicle in India to offer a range of over 800 km on a single charge.

This car is a power house — again unlike any other EV in India — and will come with 523 bhp of maximum power and 856 Nm of peak torque.

It would be able to zoom from 0 to 100 km in just four seconds, a tad slower than the AMG EQS 53’s 3.5 seconds

The EQS 580 comes with a 200 kW DC charging unit and can be recharged for about 300 km in 15 minutes flat at a quick-charging station.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 surely justifies its price, in view of its luxury features. It comes with a jumbo 56-inch MBUX hyperscreen that had been recently introduced in India when Merc rolled out the AMG variant of the EQS.

It is an integration of the three smaller screens used as passenger display, central infotainment and driver display.

It is the largest in-car screen in the world at present. The other highlights include ambient lighting, massage seats and high-end Burmester sound system, among others.

Mercedes-Benz EQS 580’s 860-km range will be the highest in India so far and coupled with the comfort, performance, litany of features and mind-blowing power, it may win many hearts in India.
