Tata Nexon EV conquers world’s highest motorable pass | Tiago electric vehicle teaser

The Tata Nexon electric vehicle (EV), which is set to face stiff competition, is showcasing its achievements — it has just broken into India’s Book of Records after conquering the world’s highest motorable pass, Umling La, in Ladakh, and, on the other hand, Tata Motors has also revealed some details of its new budget car Tiago.

The pass, which is 19,024 feet (5,798 metres) above sea level, has for the first time seen an EV conquer it. Tata Motors has managed to set this record with its recently-launched Nexon Max.

Tata Motors is set to face intense competition from Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), which is going full throttle with its to-be-launched five EVs.

And, an immediate threat is that the Nexon may lose its place as the market leader in EVs, or at least, see some of its sales dwindle in the wake of a Mahindra SUV being launched in the same category.

So, Tata Motors is going all out to prove that its electric vehicles are the best in India so far as performance goes.

The Nexon is the market leader in India’s EV space. Tata Motors has sold around 40,000 electric vehicles since 2020, and of this, 30,000 comprises the Nexon SUV.

Commenting on this recent milestone, Vivek Srivatsa, head of marketing and sales, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said, “We are pleased with the Nexon Max EV’s feat, which showcases its capabilities. All Nexon Max owners can be confident of undertaking an uninterrupted long-distance journey with a superior ride.”

He added, “The Max comes with more range and power and also supports faster charging. It boosts the overall driving efficiency and offers an uncompromised electric vehicle ownership experience.”

According to Tata Motors, the high altitude, thin air and lower pressure had little impact on the Nexon Max’s performance.

The electric motor of the Nexon Max belts out 140 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque. This revs up the SUV from 0 to 100 km (69 miles) per hour in just nine seconds.

The Max EV is propelled by a 40.5 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack, which allows a commendable range of 437 km on a single charge.

Tata Tiago teased

Budget car buffs are waiting with bated breath for the Tiago, where Tata Motors has revealed some details during its teaser.

As per the teaser images, the Tiago could come with cruise control, connected car features with smart watch compatibility, re-gen modes, leatherette seat covers and fast-charging feature.

The new Tiago may also come with a closed-off grille, fresh bumpers and new alloy wheels. The interior design could be nearly identical to the internal combustion engine (ICE) version.

On the interior as well as the exterior, the electric version of the Tata hatchback may come with some blue design elements.

Even as the powertrain of the upcoming Tiago electric has not been revealed, it could be similar to the Tigor EV’s 26kWh battery pack.

The battery pack and the magnet synchronous motor belt out 74 bhp and 170 Nm of torque. The Tiago EV may come with a range of 300 km on a single charge, as per ARAI standards. This is good if the price is kept around the Rs 7-lakh (Rs 700,000) mark.

Conclusion

So, with Nexon showcasing its achievements and with the Tiago teaser, Tata Motors could see its EVs reach the next level of growth in sales, at least in the medium term.
