Tata Tiago EV introductory starting price a tad higher at Rs 8.49 lakh

With the Tiago electric vehicle (EV) launch, Tata Motors has rolled out India’s most affordable electric car but we feel that even the introductory pricing could have been a tad cheaper at a starting price of Rs 7.5 lakh (Rs 750,000).

The new Tiago EV will, however, carry a price tag starting Rs 8.49 lakh (Rs 849,000) for the base version and the price goes up to Rs 11.79 lakh (11,79,000) for the top model. And, only the first 10,000 buyers would get the variants at these introductory prices.

Tata Tiago EV introductory price starts at Rs 8.49 lakh
Tata Tiago EV bookings will open from October.

Of the 10,000 units, 2,000 are reserved for the owners of Tata Tigor, Tata Nexon EV and Tata Nexon EV Max.

And, if the base and other variants get costlier than this, it may prompt many to shy away from them.

Tata Motors is the current market leader in India’s EV space and is ahead of the second player — Morris Garages or MG — by a wide margin.

The Tiago will join two other EVs — the Tata Nexon and Tigor — which are currently the only electric vehicles from the Tata stable right now.

Tata Motors has charted an aggressive EV strategy — it is aiming to make 30 per cent of its vehicles electric by 2030.

So far as the looks go, The Tiago EV is similar to the internal combustion engine (ICE) version, which is currently on sale.

There are some changes though — the electric vehicle has a blue EV logo along with blue highlights. Tata Tiago EV gets blue highlights on the grille as well along with side profile and alloy wheels.

Bookings are set to open around the first week of October and deliveries will start in January 2023.

The all-new Tata Tiago EV is propelled by Ziptron technology that also powers the Tigor and Nexon EVs.

The Tiago comes in seven variants — five variants have a 24-kWh battery pack and two come with a 19.2-kWh one. And, the top variant is the XZ+ Tech LUX, which costs Rs 11.79 lakh (Rs 11,79,000).

These multiple battery packs offer different sets of range. The 24-kWh battery has a range of 315 km on a single charge and this could be lower at 265 km during real-time driving.

On the other hand, the smaller 19.2-kWh battery pack comes with an ideal range of 250 km. This would whittle down to 200 km during real driving.

The Tiago is offered with four different chargers. There is a 15A compact travel charger, a 3.3-kW AC one, a fast 7.2-kW AC home charger and a fast DC charger. All of them can charge the batteries from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in less than an hour.

For instance, the 7.2-kW AC home charger can charge the battery from 0 to 100 per cent in just about three and half hours.

The Tiago EV comes in two drive modes, that is, City and Sport. It has four regeneration levels, which can boost the range.

The Tata Tiago EV has telematics with Z-Connect. There are a slew of features, including remote AC on and off, remote geo-fencing, smartwatch connectivity and real-time charging status update, among others.

The new Tata EV also comes with leatherette seats, automatic climate control, auto headlamps, electrically-adjustable outside rear-view mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control and many more features. There are eight speakers offered with the top-end model only.

Tata Motors has priced the Tiago EV somewhat higher at Rs 8.49 lakh (Rs 849,000) and above — which is the introductory price — and it must keep these prices unchanged, at least in the medium term, to get a fair response from mass-market buyers.
