Tata Motors has revealed that it will launch an electric version of its entry-level car — the Tiago — later this month itself, and by bringing an electric vehicle (EV) to the masses, it definitely plans to expand its lead before the EV space in India becomes too crowded.
With this move, the Tiago EV would become its third electric vehicle after the Nexon and Tigor in the passenger vehicle segment, and could be priced around the Rs 7-8-lakh mark (Rs 700,000-800,000), as per our estimates.
Tata Tiago EV will be launched by September-end. |
The company is set to unveil detailed specifications as well as the price range of the Tata Tiago EV in the next few weeks.
Tata Motors has set an ambitious target of rolling out 10 electric cars in a span of just five years.
“It is a momentous occasion for us as we grow our EV offering with the new Tiago EV,” Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director Shailesh Chandra said.
Chandra revealed that Tata Motors would roll out 10 EVs in different product segments, body styles and affordability levels.
He added that, “We are at the next phase of our EV expansion. This would bring all the EV benefits of an easy drive, silent cabin, low cost of ownership to a more accessible level.”
Chandra said Tata Motors is committed to its vision of making India the world’s EV hub.
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) has been established with an aim to support the Centre’s target of 30 per cent electric vehicles by 2030, he further said.
Tata Motors is currently number one in India’s passenger EV space, with a market share of around 88 per cent. Its car, the Nexon EV, tops the sales pecking order in the country.
“As the early entrant, we have shaped the EV market in India and saw it surge with the Nexon and Tigor. There are over 40,000 Tata EVs on the road today,” Chandra said.
The entry-level motor of the Tiago EV could belt out 41hp and 105nm of torque. This motor may come with two battery packs — a 16.5kwh one that paves the way for 165 km of range on a single charge.
The other could be a 21.5kwh pack that would allow 213 km. If priced below Rs 8 lakh (Rs 800,000), it would be a smart move by Tata Motors.
The all-electric Tiago was first displayed in 2017 by Tata Motors’ European Technical Centre.
The concept had used a liquid-cooled 85 kW motor that belted out 20Nm of torque and had a driving range of 100 km on a single charge.
If it is priced just below Rs 10 lakh (say Rs 9.5 lakh), as many speculate, it could be on the expensive side.
Speculation is rife that Tata Motors may announce the launch of Altroz EV and Punch EV in the coming months.
A car for the masses, if the Tata Tiago EV is priced around Rs 7-8 lakh (Rs 700,000-800,000), it would definitely find a lot of takers as many in India are waiting in the wings for the launch of a “really affordable” electric vehicle.
