Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid SUV priced competitively

Toyota has brought in the company’s first mid-sized SUV, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, into India with competitive pricing, and offering a hybrid SUV at this price point could see many altering their electric vehicle (EV) plans and flocking for these hybrids.

For now, Toyota has set the prices for its top variants only and includes strong hybrids as well as a mild hybrid — the V AT variant.

SUV prices start from Rs 15 lakh.

The prices range from a little over Rs 15 lakh (Rs 15,00,000) and go up to Rs 19 lakh (Rs 19,00,000). This pricing is judicious, considering these are the top variants.

Toyota is planning to reveal the prices for the remaining mild-hybrid variants, including the automatic all-wheel drive (AWD) version, in the next few months.

Bookings for the Urban Cruiser hybrid are under way, for which one has to pay a small advance of Rs 25,000.

Maruti Suzuki is also set to roll out its version of the Urban Cruiser, which is the Grand Vitara hybrid, and we expect the Vitara SUV to come at lower price points compared to the Urban Cruiser.

Interior

Toyota has opted for a black-brown theme for the Hyryder interior that looks pretty stunning. But this black-brown combo will be offered only with the strong hybrids and the mild type will have all-black interiors.

The Hyryder’s dashboard comes with a similar style present in the Glanza and the Maruti Baleno and Brezza.

Exterior

On the front, a major striking feature of the Hyryder is the slim double-layered daytime running lights or DRLs that are tucked well into the crystal acrylic grille.

The rear portion has sleek C-shaped tail lights that go up to the tailgate and come with dual C-shaped LED elements. The strong versions have prominent Hybrid badges on the door.

Toyota Hyryder would be having seven single-tone and four dual-tone paint shades on the exterior.

Trims

The Hyryder would come in four trims — E, S, G and V — and the mild-hybrid tech will be offered across all models.

The S, G and V trims would be offered in the strong type and the AWD version is reserved for the top-spec V variant.

Mild and strong hybrids

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder would be the first mid-sized SUV that would be available with strong hybrid technology.

The Hyryder has Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA Atkinson Cycle engine that offers 92hp and 122Nm torque and comes with eCVT gearbox.

There is also an electric motor that belts out 79hp and 141Nm of torque. When combined, the duo produces 114hp.

The strong hybrid system has a 177.6V lithium-ion battery and the fuel efficiency of this variety is 28 km to a litre, according to the company.

The Hyryder’s mild-hybrid powertrain will be from the Maruti Suzuki stable. It comes with a 1.5-litre K15C engine, which is also seen in models like the new Brezza and XL6.

The motor of the Neo Drive variant belts out 103hp and 137Nm of torque. It offers one of the two options — a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Warranty

Toyota Hyryder hybrid would have a three-year or 1,00,000 (1 lakh) km warranty. This can be extended till five years or 2,20,000 (2.2 lakh) km.

For the strong hybrid’s battery, the warranty would be either eight years or 160,000 (1.6 lakh) km, whichever is earlier.

Conclusion

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV is priced competitively, and if Maruti Suzuki also prices its hybrids smartly, it could come as a bump in the journey of pure EV players like Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra.
