Will Pravaig electric SUV ‘Defy’ all logic?

Bengaluru-based automotive start-up Pravaig Dynamics has launched a premium electric SUV, the Defy electric vehicle (EV), priced around Rs 39.5 lakh (Rs 39,50,000), but it is to be seen whether buyers would flock for it at such a price point, especially because it is from a start-up.

SUV’s exterior design

The Pravaig Defy is offered with angular styling, which gives it a crossover-like look. Pravaig bills the styling theme as ‘brutal sophistication.’

Pravaig Dynamics electric SUV launched
Pravaig Defy EV has almost the same power
as the Audi e-tron and Jaguar iPace.

The Defy somewhat resembles Range Rover SUVs, design-wise, and comes with sharp cuts in the front styling and a LED light bar, which runs across its breadth.

The top half of the SUV is painted in black whereas the glasshouse is massive. The windows are angular and the sloping roof somewhat makes the Defy seem like a sports car.

At the rear, there seems to be a line that runs across and merges with the tailgate and horizontally-placed LED light bar.

According to Pravaig, the SUV has a “notably dynamic” shape with a drag coefficient of 0.33.

Also, the Defy SUV has borrowed some styling cues from the Extinction MK1, Pravaig’s EV sports car demonstrator. A breathtaking feature will be that the SUV will have a panoramic fixed roof as standard.

The Defy electric SUV has 18-inch alloy wheels as standard along with 255/65R18 tyres.

There are the optional “aero covers” that are capable of adding 10 km or more range per charge, especially during highway drive.

The interiors

There is a huge 15.6-inch touchscreen display at the centre of the dashboard, which allows users to browse the internet as well as use it for navigation through 5G connectivity.

The Defy will also come with on-board gaming and more games may be added through over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Functions are carried out by a separate 10-inch screen behind the steering wheel. This screen can be customised according to the driving mode. The Defy SUV offers 3D sound from French audio giant Devialet.

Pravaig Defy SUV’s interiors are made from sustainable fabrics (recycled materials like PET) and the upholstery on offer is from vegan leather.

The seats come with a six-way power adjustment and ventilation. In fact, they can adapt to the cabin temperature on their own.

The Pravaig Defy is a five-seat SUV but there is also a special four-seat interior. There is a 240V outlet, a wireless charger and two individual 15.6-inch screens.

There are multiple wireless chargers and two high-powered USB-C ports, where laptops can also be charged.

Some more features are separate climate-control zones for front and rear seat passengers.

The SUV will have a unique key card, but the Defy can also be unlocked or locked using the connected car tech.

High on safety

The Pravaig Defy would be high on safety. The SUV will have automatic emergency braking at a later stage and also come with a tyre pressure monitoring system as well as six airbags as standard. Safety rating of the SUV is five-star, the top rating.

Platform & power

The Pravaig Defy SUV is built on a skateboard platform and the battery will be at the centre. As a result, there would be adequate space for the passengers as well as the luggage.

The Pravaig Defy SUV’’s power of 407hp and 620Nm puts it on a par with Audi e-tron and Jaguar iPace.

Charging, battery and range

Pravaig's Defy SUV has a five-module Li-ion battery with 5,000 hardcase shells. Battery capacity is 90.9kWh and can cover 500 km under real situations and this is highly commendable.

Pravaig Defy SUV can be charged at home or via a fast charger. The SUV will come with an optional 7.2kW home charger, which can offer up to 300 km range by charging for eight hours.

The EV can also be charged via a 150kW DC charger. Battery life is for a whopping 250,000 km. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km (36 miles) in just 4.7 seconds.

Pravaig claims that user data will be treated as property of the consumer and the company vows not to track or resell it. This is obviously a unique feature.

E-Vroooom’s view

So, by all these breathtaking features (many of them unique), Pravaig may “Defy” all logic and if the EVs performance and promised features turn out to be a hit, it can rub shoulders with the likes of luxury brands such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar (then, its pricing could also be justified).
