The MG 4 electric vehicle (EV), a hatchback, has clinched a five-star rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests and this may give it an edge over its rivals in India.
The MG 4 EV may be rolled out in 2024. |
After roll out, the MG 4 EV will compete with the likes of BYD Atto 3 as well as the to-be-launched Kona electric Facelift.
The MG 4, which is based on SIAC’s modular scalable platform, is likely to come to India as a completely-knocked down (CKD) unit or maybe a completely-built unit (CBU).
MG 4 vs BYD Atto 3 in Euro NCAP test
The MG 4 EV clinched a whopping 83 per cent in adult occupant tests, bagging 31.6 points out of 38. It also scored 80 per cent in child occupant tests, getting 39.5 out of 49 points.
In safety systems tests, the MG electric got 78 per cent with 12.6 points out of 16.
MG 4’s lowest grading was not so low — it bagged 75 per cent in the road users test with 40.6 out of 54. Even as the left-hand-drive car was tested, the scenario is similar for the right-hand-drive version also.
Similar to the MG 4, even the BYD Atto 3 clinched a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP safety tests.
In the vulnerable road users and safety tests, the BYD scored lower than the MG EV, with 69 and 74 per cent, respectively.
However, compared to the MG 4, the Atto 3 did better in the adult occupant and child occupant tests, with 91 and 89 per cent, respectively.
About the MG 4 electric vehicle
The MG 4 EV happens to be a born electric vehicle (it started off as an EV) based on parent SAIC’s modular scalable platform. Under this platform, the battery pack forms an integral part of the structure.
The MG 4 has two battery pack options — a 51kWh one along with a 64kWh. While the lower one belts out 170hp, the second one produces 203hp.
Torque output is the same at 250Nm for both the packs. The two battery pack versions also come with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration.
As far as charging is concerned, with a 7kW AC charger, the batteries of the MG 4 EV can touch from 10 per cent to 100 per cent charge in 7.5 hours for the 51kWh version. The time taken is 9 hours for the 64kWh battery pack.
Instead, if a 150kW charger is used, the batteries can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes and 39 minutes, respectively, for the lower and higher battery packs.
The range of the MG 4 EV is around 450 km (280 miles), which is among the top in the EV space.
MG 4 EV launch plans for India
MG is contemplating an India roll out of the MG 4 after the Air EV is launched, and the MG 4 electric could be seen on the road around early 2024.
No pricing details are available yet but the MG 4 could come for around Rs 20 lakh (Rs 2 million).
E-Vroooom’s views
So, with the MG 4 EV’s top rating and futuristic looks, it could attract many buyers, and if the pricing is judicious, it may become a popular electric car in India.
