With Innova Crysta EV plan, road ahead for Toyota could be electric

Toyota Innova Crysta’s electric multipurpose vehicle (MPV) was showcased as a concept in April 2022, but now, it seems the maker of hybrid vehicles is finally readying the Crysta’s electric vehicle (EV), implying that the road ahead for the company would be electric.

Like India’s Maruti Suzuki, Toyota also does not want to jump straight into EVs but instead, it would be rolling out strong and mild hybrids in the interim before going full throttle on electric cars.

Toyota Innova Crysta EV launch soon
Toyota would do well if it can keep the price of the
Innova Crysta EV bellow Rs 20 lakh (Rs 20,00,000).

Toyota Innova Crysta, a well-known MPV in India, has been on the road for quite some time.

The Japanese car maker has been updating the models of Crysta regularly.

In the recent past, the Toyota Innova Hycross, a hybrid engine version of the car, was showcased.

Other than the hybrid engine version, Toyota has been holding talks for a while for rolling out the Innova Crysta electric.

In a bid to fast track the electric version, Toyota has been spotted testing the electric MPV on the roads.

This testing of the EV could imply that the automaker may also be testing a new chassis for its ladder-on-frame vehicles.

There could be a major breakthrough — in case the company sees success — and this could help the auto giant to boost its line-up of electric vehicles.

American auto companies such as Ford, General Motors as well as others have been regularly converting gasoline and diesel vehicle models into EVs.

After it is rolled out, the Toyota Innova Crysta electric may be the beginning of Toyota’s journey towards becoming a full-fledged EV maker.

And, it seems that Toyota’s journey has already started and it is exploring a slew of powertrain options.

The Japanese auto giant has already brought in its hydrogen fuel-cell-powered vehicles into India (the Mirai), and the Toyota Innova Hycross, a hybrid engine-powered MPV, is slated for roll out soon.

The Toyota Innova Crysta EV’s exteriors are almost the same as the internal combustion engine (ICE) version but there are a few modifications, though. The grille seen in the ICE version is absent.

All over its body, the Crysta EV comes with blue highlights. These go up to the tail lamps as well as the auto major’s badge on the tailgate.

The Toyota Innova Crysta electric’s roll out is likely to take some time, if the company plans to launch it at all.

However, as of now, the solace for Indian fans is that the Japanese automaker is working on launching the Toyota Innova Hycross in India.

The hybrid engine-powered version of the MPV would be sold simultaneously with the normal Toyota Innova Crysta in India.

So, if Toyota moves to electric vehicles from hybrids starting with the Innova Crysta electric, it could be a start to the culmination of its hybrid journey towards becoming a pure EV player (like Tata Motors) but this transformation could be a long and steep road ahead.
