Volkswagen (VW) is set to unveil the global ID.Aero, its electric vehicle (EV) — which would replace the Passat — in the second half of 2023 in North America, China and Europe, and with this roll out, the company may be planning an aggressive global launch of its EVs.
VW had showcased the ID.Aero in June this year, and depending on the market response, it would accelerate the transition of its line up of existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles into EVs.
The Volkswagen ID.Aero EV could come for $40,000. |
The car shown earlier in June was a smart and futuristic looking mid-sized premium sedan based on VW’s MEB architecture, which is specific for its EV offerings.
The VW ID.Aero comes with a 88kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which is capable of travelling a distance of a whopping 620 km on a single charge. This would be one of the highest ranges, even among luxury cars.
It seems that VW will go full throttle with its electric vehicle plans soon and hopes to grab a big share in the global EV market. And, the ID-badge vehicles would be a major part of this plan.
Under the ID brand, VW is planning to line up a number of vehicles, including some small and affordable cars, which would be suited for city driving.
The carmaker has also rolled out the Scott brand, under which it is launching rugged SUVs as well as electric pick-up trucks.
VW electric vehicle sales
In the first nine months of this year, VW has sold over 200,000 electric vehicles, up almost 25 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Other than the VW brand, total electric vehicles sold by the Volkswagen Group, which also includes brand names like Skoda, sold a total of 366,000 units (EVs).
This is what a top VW executive had to say about the ID.Aero EV, “It is a car with an emotional and extremely aerodynamic design, offering a range of over 600 km. It gives an extraordinary amount of space as well as a premium interior.”
Other Volkswagen EVs
Besides the ID.Aero battery electric vehicle (BEV), Volkswagen will come up with its well-known ID.4 SUV for India. And, the European variant of the ID.Buzz van would be available only in Europe in the form of passenger as well as cargo versions.
The North American debut of the ID.Buzz (a fresh long-wheelbase version) would happen around 2023 itself. However, buyers would have to wait for another year for its roll out.
The line-up of Volkswagen’s MEB-based vehicles are the VW ID.3, VW ID.4, VW ID.5 (coupe version of the ID.4) as well as the ID.6 (a three-row vehicle that is seen on the road only in China).
E-Vroooom’s views
Although Volkswagen has been adopting an aggressive strategy in Europe, the US as well as China (that is, the developed markets) with the ID.Aero EV launch plan, it is going slow with its offerings in countries such as India where it is currently only planning to roll out the electric ID.4 SUV in the year 2023.
