Hyundai has finally rolled out the Ioniq 5 at the Auto Expo 2023 in Greater Noida, and the crossover will be Rs 16 lakh (Rs 16,00,000) cheaper than its sister car, the Kia EV6, as the former will be assembled in India.
The Ioniq 5 will come for an introductory price of Rs 44.95 lakh (Rs 44,95,000) (ex-showroom) to the first 500 customers, which is still steep.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 can be booked by paying Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000). |
The Ioniq 5 will become Hyundai’s second electric vehicle (EV) offering for the India market after the Kona, which was rolled out in 2019 and is priced around Rs 24 lakh (Rs 24,00,000).
Bookings for the Ioniq 5 have already started for a payment of Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000).
The Ioniq 5 has a litany of accolades, which could make it an attractive EV for those willing to shell out the money. For instance, in 2022, it clinched the World Design of the Year and World Electric Car of the Year awards.
Hyundai Ioniq 5: Exterior
The Ioniq 5 was unveiled as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the year 2019. The final production model from the concept has an unusual retro-cum-futuristic look.
The retro feel of the Ioniq 5 is in its sharp lines, flat surfaces and SUV-type look.
The headlamps and tail lamps come in an unusual pixelated garb and the 20-inch aero-optimised wheels wear a turbine-like design.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 will come in three paint shades, that is, Gravity Gold Matte, Optic White and Midnight Black Pearl.
Hyundai Ioniq 5: Interior and features
The Ioniq 5’s interior can be dubbed minimalistic with the EV having a flat floor while the seats are flexible and there is a movable central console.
The fabrics are made from recycled plastic and the EV has eco-friendly leather for upholstery.
The Hyundai EV offers vehicle-to-load function with an output of 3.6kW. This can allow electrical appliances like laptops and mobiles inside the car.
This function can be utilised with the help of two ports. One of these are under the rear seats and the other outside the car near the charging port.
The Ioniq 5 has a pair of 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and touchscreen. The technology is a major plus having heads-up display with augmented reality (AR) functions as well as ADAS tech.
Hyundai Ioniq 5: About the powertrain
The Ioniq 5 is propelled by a 72.6kWh battery, which will result in a range of 631 km (ARAI-certified) on a single charge. And, this is commendable considering the current EV tech available, globally.
Hyundai’s electric car can support a superfast 800V charging, which can charge the battery up to 80 per cent in less than 20 minutes.
The Ioniq 5 comes only in rear-wheel-drive version, and the electric motor belts out 217hp and 350Nm of torque.
Why Hyundai Ioniq 5 is cheaper than Kia EV6
Unlike the Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 will be much more expensive as it will be fully imported whereas Hyundai’s electric vehicle will be assembled in India.
Hyundai: What next?
Besides the Ioniq 5, Hyundai also displayed the Ioniq 6 EV, a sedan, as well as the Nexo fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV).
Hyundai also showcased its connected car tech, billed the ADAS tech, and future mobility services.
E-Vroooom’s views
So, even as the price of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, on display at the Auto Expo 2023, is beyond the reach of the common Indian buyer, it would sell much more than the Kia EV6 as the former is Rs 16 lakh cheaper than its sister car, and that too, with almost the same features.
