Tesla to make a dent globally even in long term | Model Y may become highest-selling car in the world

The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling passenger car in Europe during November, trumping the Volkswagen Golf, and this could be an indication that Elon Musk’s electric vehicle (EV) company is here to make a big dent even in the medium-to-long term and the Model Y could even become the leading electric car (in terms of sales) globally.

Tesla top EV seller in Europe

The Model Y was out of the top-50 list in October but it made a sharp U-turn in November by selling over 19,000 cars in Europe, which is a surge of 250 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The electric crossover was also the top-selling car in Europe during September.

Besides the US, Tesla has also been making a dent in Europe with total European sales skyrocketing 97 per cent in November to 31,820 cars. This is mainly owing to the sales surge of its Model Y.

While the Model Y was the only EV that made a big mark in Europe's November sales, the Dacia Sandero came second with sales of 18,746 units, a rise of 16 per cent. The Toyota Yaris was third in the pecking order with 17,309 units, a sales surge of 150 per cent.

Then, there is the Peugeot 208 that also has an all-electric variant and is Europe's overall top seller (2022), with a volume of just over 193,000.

This is as per Dataforce's preliminary numbers quoted by Automotive News Europe. The French compact hatchback may have closed 2022 as Europe's best-selling car.

Six different models clinched the top-sellers’ title for different months but Tesla Model Y (topper in September and November) as well as Tesla Model 3 (topper in March) were the only EVs in the list.

Tesla's Germany sales

Germany is Europe's biggest car market where one Tesla model dethroned the other — the Model Y was beaten by the Model 3. This is according to data by the country's national auto agency, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA).

During November 2022, Tesla saw 6,811 Model 3 sales in Germany against a figure of 3,687 for the Model Y.

Last month also, deliveries for the refurbished Model S and Model X started in Germany. Then, Tesla had sold 106 and 35 cars of the two models, respectively.

Tesla's deliveries in Germany saw the highest-ever levels during the month of November. It saw a 93 per cent surge year-on-year with a total of 10,819 vehicles delivered.

The November 2022 figures were the second best for the electric vehicles’ giant in the country just after September.

Tesla, meanwhile, has slashed prices for the second time in three months in Asia (Japan and South Korea) and Australia of the Model Y and Model 3, thus triggering another price war.

Earlier, Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive officer (CEO), had predicted that the Tesla Model Y would become the world’s highest-selling EV in 2023. With the car model topping the charts in Europe and other regions, that could become a possibility.

Model Y could become the world’s highest-selling EV this year, and it seems that Tesla would still make a big dent with many of its cars in the world car market, even in the long term.
