MG Motor has revealed that its upcoming compact electric vehicle (EV) would be called the ‘Comet’ in India, and if it is priced around the Rs 10-lakh mark (Rs 10,00,000), MG could lose out to the likes of Tata Motors, which has unveiled the Tiago EV for less than Rs 9 lakh (Rs 900,000).
It is believed that MG will pack the Comet with the latest on-board technology and it could be rolled out around the middle of this year itself.
The MG Comet compact electric car could hit the road maybe within six months. |
On why it named the compact EV the Comet, MG says it got inspired by the iconic 1934 British airplane that participated in the England-Australia Mac Robertson Air Race.
In fact, many of MG’s cars like the Hector and Gloster SUV are named after British warplanes used in World War-II.
MG Comet EV’s exterior design
The Comet will be a unique tiny hatchback in India being just 2.9 metres in length. It is a three-door and four-seater EV and is slated to be the smallest car in India.
But MG says the interior will be efficient in space. This is mainly owing to the electric skateboard architecture, longish 2,010 mm wheelbase and the boxy shape of the car.
So far as the looks go, the Comet is likely to almost look identical to the MG Wulung Air EV, the micro car, which is sold in Indonesia.
The Comet will come with a two-tone finish at the front fascia, a tall nose, and there would also be a wrap-round strip under the windscreen with LED lighting elements that go on till the wing mirrors.
The small wheels are at the edges and the window lines — which are asymmetrical — come with dual-tone paint finish, which makes the car stand out. The rear end is the same as the front fascia.
MG Comet set to be packed with features
The MG Comet’s compact size may give an impression that it will be positioned as a budget vehicle. Since MG is pricing the Comet around Rs 10 lakh (which is very steep), the car maker is also set to pack the EV with a litany of features.
Some premium features that the Comet may come with are connected car tech, dual-tone interiors with quality materials, voice commands, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A sun roof is likely to be another offering.
In the interior, there could be a dual-screen infotainment set up made up of two 10.25-inch screens, similar to high-end vehicles like the XUV700 or many of the Mercedes models.
MG Comet’s powertrain and range
The MG Comet electric car may be propelled by a battery of 20-25kWh capacity. The battery can be locally sourced, thanks to a tie up between MG and Tata AutoComp.
The Comet may come with a single, front-axle motor with a power output of around 50kW (68hp). The driving range could be around 300 km (which like other MG EVs will be certified by ICAT).
This range is commendable for a car of this size but it may not justify the high pricing.
E-Vroooom’s views
The MG Comet is similar in size to the small car Tata Nano, which was not accepted by the Indian people and the high pricing could also see MG’s new electric car lose out to the Tata Tiago electric, which is a bigger and a cheaper EV.
