Well, now even Elon Musk’s Tesla is likely to unveil its cheapest electric vehicle (EV), the Model 2, in a clear indication that America’s iconic EV maker could be getting into the volume game soon and eyeing to become the world’s biggest electric car player.
Besides the Model 2, Tesla may also unveil a new electric platform, which could see its future EVs being launched. The Model 2 could be showcased in just a few days from now.
Tesla Model 2 | Distance on a single charge
It is believed that the Model 2 would be based on a new platform and could come with a range of 400 km on a single charge, which would be quite commendable.
Also, the Model 2 cars, which would cater to the global markets, could be manufactured in China.
What seems to appear on the sketches at Tesla’s engineering headquarters in California is a face-lifted Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y-like side profile that would be Tesla’s smallest and cheapest model, which was showcased at a preview for a major event.
The car that was showcased comprised three doors with rather smaller, squatter proportions than the Model 3.
Model 2 on next gen platform?
As per murmurs, the new Model 2 may be the first car to use the iconic electric car brand’s next-generation EV platform — that has been codenamed Generation 3.
Regarding the platform, Musk had earlier said that it will pave the way for Tesla to cut production costs as well as vehicle prices, and double the company’s output as well.
Pricing of the Model 2
The Tesla Model 2 looks like a hatchback and may come for less than $25,000. It could be 15 per cent shorter and 30 per cent lighter compared to the Model 3. Also, the Model 2’s battery pack could be 25 per cent smaller.
Model 3 is right now the most affordable Tesla offering globally, amid its immensely success story.
Cheaper Tesla EVs on anvil
According to Musk, Tesla’s new platform will mean producing EVs at half the cost, which indicates that a mass-market, affordable hatchback from the Tesla stable is highly viable.
With the affordable Model 2, Tesla would be taking on the Volkswagen ID3, Nissan Leaf and the Kia e-Niro, internationally.
Model 2 production in China
The new Tesla Model 2 hatchback will be produced in China as we had said. Musk’s company has posted job offers for people to manufacture a compact hatchback (probably the Model 2) in China.
Tesla’s India plan fails
Tesla was planning an India foray in the financial year 2021-22. But after months of lobbying for a cut in import duties on completely-knocked down (CKD) cars, it finally gave up.
The Indian government wanted Musk to manufacture cars in India, which he refused to do.
E-Vroooom’s views
By producing cheaper cars, Tesla may be making a big attempt for sustainable profitability.
So, by planning to get into the volume game with the cheap Model 2, Tesla may be aiming to become the world’s highest-selling EV maker, beating China’s BYD but will that happen or will China come up with even cheaper electric cars?
