Explorer EV unveiled in Europe but does Ford need to come back to India to boost sales?

Ford has opened the lid on the 2024 Explorer electric vehicle (EV) in the European market and the electric SUV has been built in collaboration with Volkswagen (VW), that is, on the VW platform but will it need to come back to India to boost the Explorer EV’s and other electric car sales?

The Explorer EV is, however, set to be smaller than the VW ID4, its sister car.

Ford Explorer EV unveiled in Europe
Ford Explorer EV may cost around euro 45,000.

Ford Explorer electric exterior

Even as the Explorer shares its platform with the ID4, Ford’s electric SUV comes with a flat roof, rugged stance and square profile.

At the side profile, the Explorer EV would be surrounded by dual-toned machined alloy wheels, conventional door handles as well as a floating roof with black A-pillars. The rear profile comes with C-shaped LED tail lamps.

The Ford Explorer EV will be offered with L-shaped LED headlamps with inverted daytime running lamps (DRLs), chunky wheel patterns and a large logo.

Explorer EV interior

According to the American car giant, the Explorer EV is built with 470 litres of boot space, which is adequately comfortable.

In the interior, the Ford Explorer EV has a portrait-style 14.6-inch touchscreen along with Ford Sync Move, which can be lowered or raised by around 30 degrees.

It is also offered with a 5.0-inch digital driver’s display, wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay along with a sound bar on the dashboard, among other features.

Ford EV to have many other features

There are a host of new features and they are — hands-free tailgate, clear exit assist along with lane change assist.

The 2024 Explorer electric will come with advanced features like Driver Assist, Parking Assist as well as a host of cameras and much more.

The European version of the Ford Explorer EV will be made at the car major’s Cologne EV factory in Germany.

Explorer EV to come in two variants

The electric Ford Explorer is expected to be offered in two variants — the Explorer and Explorer Premium.

No info on range, battery

Ford is still tight-lipped on the mechanical specs of the Explorer EV such as the range, battery and electric motors that would be used.

However, according to the American auto giant, the battery will be capable of charging from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in less than half an hour.

Bookings and price

The Ford Explorer electric will be placed a notch below the Ford Mach-E. Bookings for the Explorer EV are expected to open towards the end of 2023. The price of the Ford Explorer EV is expected to start at euro 45,000 (Rs 40 lakh or Rs 40,00,000).

Ford in India

Ford had closed its India factories in 2022, and there is no inkling yet whether it will come back to the country any time soon. So, Indian car buffs may have to wait longer before they can experience the Explorer EV.

E-Vroooom’s views

Ford Explorer EV may see an initial sales push in Europe, but to raise the sales globally for the medium term at least, it may have to consider coming back to India as the country’s EV sales are set to skyrocket in the near future.
