Tesla is moving to a fully vision-based parking system by installing numerous cameras around its cars.
These additional ultrasonic sensors are set to help estimate distances and provide parking assistance without much complexity.

For cars that were delivered without sensors, Park Assist, Autopark, Summon, and Smart Summon would come after a software update is done to enable them with these features.
In around six months, the software testing has seen some success with Tesla launching vision-based parking assist in its 2023.6.9 update.
Tesla’s Vision Park Assist
Tesla’s Vision Park Assist aids in visual and audio alerts of nearby objects.
Tesla has issued a disclaimer saying that the Vision Park Assist should not be considered sanguine and is just a guidance for drivers to avert obstacles. It should not be seen as a substitute to an attentive driver.
Videos in the social media show that drivers have started testing these functions, and although with not 100 per cent accuracy, they have been “reasonably consistent.” During testing, this tech helped many drivers avoid obstacles.
There are certain situations where this tech needs to improve. In case a driver pulls between two cars and towards a trash can, the system deactivates and says that parking assist is unavailable.
This makes it difficult for him to park under such circumstances. Also, if you have a rack behind your car, this Park Assist will identify it as an obstacle.
Well, Tesla needs to do some homework in order to achieve near perfection in this technology.
And, going by past experience, Tesla has seen many flaws while trying to be a trailblazer in many of its technologies.
A few years back, Elon Musk’s firm suddenly removed radar from its cars and shifted to a fully camera-based system for its driver assist feature. And later, it took a U-turn.
This led to some limitations for new owners of non-radar cars and they had to wait for software updates to get these features again.
The same thing happened with the windshield of Tesla cars where sensors were removed to give way to vision instead.
This new tech has identified styrofoam on the road as rain. Ditto was the case with ultrasonics, which has stunned many customers.
Tesla ultrasonic sensors missing
Tesla has seen surging sales in the US but many of its buyers were not aware that the ultrasonic sensors — a basic feature for luxury cars that are priced over $50,000 — were missing. This annoyed many Tesla car owners.
But Tesla’s many tech updates and added features — which it does over time — probably act as a cushion for its owners, who give a thumbs up to their favourite brand.

So, Tesla’s vision-based parking assist, if successful, could prove to be a game changing move in the EV space, globally, and could boost its car sales until rivals do a catch up.
