Mercedes-Benz has launched the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance, which is its first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) for India, and this roll out is in the interim, as the luxury car brand seeks to go fully electric by 2030.
Mercedes-Benz bullish on India
The German car maker is bullish about India, and has seen a whopping 107 per cent sales growth for its top-end vehicles (priced above Rs 1 crore or Rs 10 million) during the 2022-23 period.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 S E Performance hybrid will be priced around Rs 3.3 crore (Rs 33 million) in India. |
Merc’s best-selling models in India were its E-Class and C-Class sedans, which saw a robust growth of 27 per cent in FY23.
In the luxury car segment in India, Mercedes-Benz has again retained its top slot with about 42 per cent market share during the last financial year.
GT 63 S E Performance pricing
Mercedes has priced the GT 63 S E Performance hybrid at Rs 3.3 crore (Rs 33 million) in India and this would be the new flagship AMG model in the country.
Despite the high pricing, GT 63 S E Performance could see many takers, as this category of the high-end market is not price sensitive in the real sense.
The four-door coupe, which was rolled out globally in September 2021, besides being the first plug-in hybrid, is also the most powerful vehicle till date in the Mercedes-AMG series.
Mercedes has adopted a unique promotion strategy — all GT 63 S E Performance customers will get their keys from seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton.
Mercedes AMG GT 63 S E Performance powertrain
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance model would be on the lines of the standard GT 63 S four-door coupe.
Like the coupe, this Performance hybrid model will come with a 639hp, twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine.
This unit is linked to an axle-mounted 204hp electric motor at the rear that helps it to belt out an output of 843hp as well as a 1,470Nm of torque.
Mercedes AMG range, top speed
With this unbelievable output, the AMG GT 63 S E Performance hybrid can rev up from 0 to 100 km per hour in just 2.9 seconds, according to the company. The top speed is a mind blowing 316 km per hour.
This super sedan AMG comes with a 6.1kWh, 400V battery pack that weighs just 89 kg. This propels the motor.
EV mode, other features of the AMG Performance hybrid model
When on the EV-only mode, the GT 63 S E Performance hybrid has a range of 12 km with a top speed of 130 km per hour.
This AMG model is feature rich — it offers seven drive modes and there are four levels of regenerative braking. There is a provision for one-pedal driving under certain conditions.
Mercedes AMG GT 63 S E Performance exterior, interior details
When compared to the standard car, the AMG GT 63 S E Performance hybrid sees a slew of changes in exterior design that include a redesigned front bumper, like the one in the two-door AMG GT.
There are fresh exhaust outlets and a unique new design for the 20-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels.
Also, there is a flap on the rear bumper where the charging port is located. Moreover, the standard GT 63 S four-door coupe and the PHEV four-door coupe look strikingly similar.
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance hybrid comes with small changes to the interior.
Just like other Mercedes battery-operated vehicles, this sedan provides owners with many hybrid-specific information.
These are an EV range indicator, real-time power consumption info and electric motor power gauge via the MBUX infotainment system.
Drivers can also buoy the sound experience by shifting between the ‘balanced’ and ‘powerful’ modes via the buttons located in the centre console or on the steering wheel.
Mercedes AMG GT 63 S E Performance rival
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance super sedan has a single competitor in India, the Porsche Panamera Turbo SE hybrid. The price of the Porsche hybrid is Rs 2.7 crore (Rs 27 million).
With the AMG GT 63 S E Performance roll out, Mercedes-Benz plans to launch 10 vehicles in the top-end segment (above Rs 10 million) in India soon.
E-Vroooom’s views
Since Mercedes-Benz is seeing a surge in its high-end car sales in India, it is a good signal for the likes of the GT 63 S E Performance hybrid, which could debut with high sales figures and give a fillip to the luxury car giant before it goes fully electric by 2030.
