You may have just purchased an electric four-wheeler, and one of the first questions that may come to your mind is that, is it safe to charge an electric vehicle (EV) in the rain?
You may be planning a road trip to another city, which could be over 1,000 km away, during this monsoon season.
You will obviously need to charge your vehicle, at least three to four times before you reach your destination.
The number of times you need to charge your EV depends on the range it offers on a single charge
In case, it is a Tata Nexon, it can go for around 300 plus km on a single charge (during real-life road conditions). So, you will need to charge it, maybe, on three occasions.
Check live if the route has charging stations
Also, one of the first things you need to identify is whether that route has adequate charging stations.
There is an app called PlugShare that gives live updates on charging stations along your route.
Any danger in charging in the rain?
One important thing you must note is that an electric vehicle and the charger already adhere to certain safety standards.
This, in turn, protects them from dust, water or any foreign particle penetration, and these are also weatherproof.
What they come with are clever on-board sensors that can easily detect any threat.
In case any obstruction or threat is detected once the charging starts, the process will be suspended automatically.
So, you can be sure that charging an electric vehicle is almost 100 per cent safe, if you are doing it at an open public station even during a downpour.
Some precautions though: Ensure that the charging gun and the vehicle's charging socket are dry during the time of connection. This will help you avoid any malfunctions or delays in charging.
But obviously, there is no danger to charging your two or four-wheeler EV in the rain.
