The MG Comet was
recently rolled out in India and is the cheapest electric vehicle (EV) in the
country, but earlier, the Tata Tiago was the lowest-priced electric car, and
the Tata Nexon Prime, is also among the low-priced EVs in India.
So far as pricing and performance go, we check out which of the three, according to E-Vroooom, is the best, second best and third best low-priced EVs.
The MG Comet EV has a boxy design with a full-width LED light
bar, which is a unique design addition.
Its charging port is in the front under the light bar, and there
is the flap, which has an illuminated MG logo.
At the rear, the Comet
EV comes with ‘Extended Horizon’ connecting lights. The Comet EV is
offered with 12-inch alloy wheels, which is the smallest wheel size among all
passenger cars.
The EV comes in five colours along with multiple graphics packs. They have been categorised under sticker styles and lit packs.
The MG car has asymmetrical window design, with the rear windows being mounted vertically.
The Comet EV is offered with a white and grey interior with two 10.25-inch screens — one of them is the infotainment system and the other the digital instrument cluster.
The front seats of the Comet comprise a unique one-touch tumble-and-fold feature, while the rear seats come with a 50:50 split.
The MG EV has a litany of features — keyless entry, manual AC controls, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
There are three USB ports, steering-mounted controls and over 55 connected features. Other features include ABS, EBD, tyre pressure monitoring system, reverse camera and sensors along with dual-front airbags.
The electric MG Comet’s prices begin from Rs 7.98 lakh (Rs 798,000) and go up to Rs 9.98 lakh. Its range is 250 km on a single charge.
Tata Tiago electric
The Tata Tiago
electric vehicle was once the most-affordable EV in India but after the launch
of MG Comet, it is now the second-cheapest EV.
So far as the looks are concerned, the Tiago EV is almost identical to the internal combustion engine (ICE) variant, which is right now on the road.
Tata Tiago EV is a budget EV and has a litany of hi-tech features. |
The Tiago EV will be offered in seven variants —
five with 24-kWh battery pack and two with a 19.2-kWh one. The 24-kWh
battery has a range of 315 km (ideal situation) and could come down to 265 km
in real-life driving.
The smaller 19.2-kWh battery pack comes with a range of 250 km but falls to 200 km while on the road.
It has four different chargers — a 15A compact travel charger, a 3.3-kW AC charger, a fast 7.2-kW AC home charger and a fast DC charger. All of them can charge the batteries from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in less than an hour.
The Tiago EV has two drive modes — City and Sport. It is offered with four regeneration levels, which can boost the range.
The Tata Tiago EV has a litany of features, including remote AC on and off, smartwatch connectivity, remote geo-fencing and real-time charging status update.
The new Tata EV also comes with leatherette seats, automatic climate control, auto headlamps, electrically-adjustable outside rear-view mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and cruise control.
Prices of the Tiago EV start from Rs 8.49 lakh (Rs 849,000) and go up to Rs 11.79 lakh (Rs 1.18 million).
Tata Nexon Prime EV
Compared to the MG Comet and Tata Tiago, the Nexon Prime is way costlier but considering its performance and high sales, we have included it among the top-three cheapest EVs in India.
Tata Nexon Standard EV has, in fact, been rebranded with additional features and has been named as the Nexon Prime.
The price of the Tata Nexon Prime begins from Rs 15 lakh and goes up to Rs 17 lakh. |
The Nexon Prime electric comes
with a litany of new features that were only available in the higher variant
Nexon EV Max.
The Prime variant is priced from Rs 15 lakh (Rs 15,00,000) to Rs 17 lakh (Rs 17,00,000).
The Nexon Prime EV also has a four-level regenerative braking like the Max variant. Here, Level 0 cuts off regeneration, while it is strongest at Level 3.
This is useful when a driver wants to recharge the batteries on the go, particularly in heavy traffic or while going downhill. It raises the driving range.
Among other new features are an indirect tyre pressure monitoring system via a smartphone app, cruise control as well as smartwatch-integrated connectivity features. The Prime has two airbags.
The Nexon Prime EV has
a 30.2kWh battery pack paired with an electric motor belting out 129PS and
245Nm. The ARAI-claimed range is around 312 km.
E-Vroooom’s view
So, we see the Tata Nexon Prime, Tata Tiago and the MG Comet as the top 3 low-priced EVs in India but, according to us, Nexon Prime would be in third place (8.5/10), the MG Comet in second (8.6/10) and the Tata Tiago EV is clearly the topper (9/10) as it is offering a lot more features than the Comet, at a very affordable price, and is unlike the Nexon, which is priced steeply.
