Volvo, the Swedish luxury carmaker, is bringing to India its first ground-up electric vehicle (EV), the C40 Recharge, which is in the premium segment, and now, it must look at rolling out budget EVs to gain some traction in the country’s market.
The C40 Recharge would be Volvo’s second EV in India, with the first one being the XC40 Recharge SUV, which was driven in last year.
C40 Recharge | Price and booking
The new coupe SUV carries an introductory price tag of Rs 61.25 lakh (Rs 6.2 million) and would be available in a couple of months.
Bookings have already started and one has to pay a refundable Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) deposit to book the C40 Recharge.
C40 is a first born EV
Managing director (MD) of Volvo Car India Jyoti Malhotra said that the C40 Recharge is Volvo’s first born electric car.
The EV comes with leather-free interiors and some unique features that make it stand out as a fully-electric sporty and contemporary car.
Volvo plans to eliminate the use of leather by 2025 to reduce harm to animals.
C40 Recharge | Very high safety rating
Volvo is one of the top cars in the world so far as safety rating goes.
The C40 Recharge comes with a Euro NCAP five-star rating on safety performance. It would be assembled at the auto giant’s plant at Hosakote in Bengaluru.
Localisation to bring down prices
Prices would come down whenever the C40 Recharge’s components achieve various levels of localisation from the current completely knocked-down (CKD) version now.
Features and specifications
The C40 Recharge comes with a coupe-like design along with a sloped roofline and has a two-part spoiler. It is offered with Pixel LED headlights and split LED tail lamps.
The interior is similar to the XC40 Recharge — with a 9.0-inch touchscreen, wood inlays on the dashboard along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
In the interior of the C40 Recharge, there is also an Android-based infotainment system with an onboard e-SIM.
The C40 Recharge also offers a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, a full suite of sensor-based ADAS tech with autonomous driving and connected car tech.
It also comes with heating and cooling, a dual-zone climate control system, power front seats with driver-side memory function, along with a premium Harman Kardon sound system.
However, boot space inside the C40 is less compared to the XC40 Recharge — with 413 litres and 452 litres, respectively.
Powertrain and platform
The C40 Recharge is offered with the same platform and powertrain as the XC40 Recharge.
The duo is based on the Compact Modular Architecture platform.
Battery and range of C40 Recharge
The C40 Recharge comes with a dual-motor set up with one on each axle and has a 78kWh battery pack.
The EV has a range of 530 km (330 miles) as per the WLTP standard and it is 683 km (424 miles) on a single charge, according to the ICAT benchmark.
The C40 Recharge can fast charge with a 150kW DC charger. Batteries can be charged 100 per cent in less than 30 minutes.
The two electric motors belt out 408 hp and 660 Nm of torque, making the C40 Recharge an all-wheel-drive vehicle.
The C40 Recharge can accelerate from 0 to 100 km (62 miles) per hour in just 4.7 seconds, around 0.2 seconds quicker than the XC40 Recharge.
C40 Recharge rivals
The C40 Recharge will compete with the likes of Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 in India’s electric vehicle space.
E-Vroooom’s views
Volvo’s new C40 Recharge is offered with a litany of features and has the highest safety rating to justify its price but the company must also bring in budget EVs to make major inroads into India’s EV market.
