Tata Motors has just rolled out the first pure electric vehicle (EV) architecture called ‘acti.ev’, which will see its future portfolio of EVs, such as Punch, Sierra, Harrier and Curvv being launched, and the first to roll out will be the Punch.ev, which could be priced around Rs 11 lakh (Rs 1.1 million).
“Punch.ev will be the first to roll out from this pure electric architecture, which will see a slew of vehicles with multiple body styles and sizes,” the company's statement said.
The ‘acti.ev’ architecture will be different from the electrified modular architecture (EMA) that Tata Motors will adopt from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) for its ‘Avinya’ range of cars.
The ‘acti.ev’ architecture may belt out cars up to 600 km (327 miles) of range.
In November 2022, Tata Motors’ EV arm had inked a licensing pact with JLR for adopting its EMA.
In fact, Tata Motors had last Friday opened bookings for the Punch.ev, which is set to be the first ‘Born EV’ by the Tata company. It will launch on January 17.
Tata Motors’ born electric cars
Born EV refers to pure electric vehicles, which are not modified versions of earlier cars but are specifically designed and manufactured as EVs from the start.
They are not earlier versions of existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Examples of electric vehicles adapted from Tata Motors’ ICE cars include the Tiago, Tigor and Nexon.
Good year for EVs
The year 2023 was a buoyant year for electric vehicles in India. Nearly 100,000 units of electric cars were sold in the country, a 100 per cent annual growth in 2023 compared to 2022.
Tata Motors is the clear leader and commands more than 80 per cent share in the Indian electric car market.
2024 EV grow prediction
Shailesh Chandra, who is a top executive in the EV and passenger vehicle divisions of Tata Motors, had revealed last month that he is expecting electric car sales to grow by about 40 per cent in 2024.
Anand Kulkarni, who is the chief products officer at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, the Tata EV company, said, “This acti.ev architecture has been carefully designed to enable higher efficiencies, maximising space, enhancing the driving experience and paving the way for higher battery capacity.”
“The acti.ev is a pure electric architecture, which is a global-ready and a future-facing platform. It allows implementation of software-oriented features. This ensures that our vehicles are not only technologically advanced but also future proof,” Kulkarni revealed.
Tata Punch EV in five broad trims
The Tata Punch EV comes in five broad trims — Smart, Smart +, Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered +. The choice of powertrain options are — Standard and Long Range.
The Long Range variant is offered from the mid-spec Adventure onwards. In total, for the Tata Punch EV, you can choose from eight variants.
E-Vroooom’s views
Tata Punch.ev may be priced around Rs 11 lakh, and if this comes with a range of at least over 300 km (186 miles), it could become popular, but still we feel that the company should offer the entry-level variant at Rs 10 lakh (Rs 1 million).
