JSW MG Motor has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the introduction of their new electric crossover SUV, the Windsor, by keeping it at a game-changing price and giving with it a lifetime battery warranty.
Priced attractively at approximately Rs 9.99 lakh (Rs 999,000) (ex-showroom), the Windsor is set to make electric vehicles more accessible to a broader audience.
Windsor’s innovative pricing
Windsor pricing strategy sets it apart from competitors. Starting at Rs 9.99 lakh, this new model is positioned to compete with other electric SUVs, such as Tata Motors’ Curvv, which is priced much higher at Rs 17.49 lakh (Rs 1.7 million).
To further enhance affordability, JSW MG Motor has introduced a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model.
Under this scheme, customers pay Rs 3.5 per km for battery usage, reducing the initial purchase price and it makes the EV more budget-friendly.
Competitive positioning in the market
The Windsor measures 4.29 metres in length, placing it in the same category as the Tata Curvv but with a much lower price.
This strategic pricing is intended to appeal to a segment of buyers who typically purchase vehicles in the sub-Rs 10 lakh range and this would put JSW MG way above others in the EV volume game.
Commitment to boosting EV adoption
Parth Jindal, director of JSW MG Motor India, said it wants to boost EV adoption across India.
By targeting this sub-Rs 10 lakh segment, the Windsor is positioned to compete with traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in this price range as well.
Jindal emphasised that JSW MG Motor aims to disrupt the industry with innovative pricing and additional benefits, which can take the EV market share beyond the current 2 per cent.
Lifetime battery warranty
JSW MG Motor has addressed common concerns related to electric vehicles, such as high initial costs and battery longevity. The Windsor comes with a lifetime battery warranty, offering buyers peace of mind.
Buyback plan, other benefits
Additionally, the company has introduced a buyback plan where the car can be repurchased at 60 per cent of its value after three years, provided the buyer opts for a three-year annual maintenance package.
Other perks include free vehicle maintenance, roadside assistance, and scheduled servicing for three years, enhancing the overall value proposition.
Cost comparison with ICE Vehicles
In cost effectiveness, the Windsor presents a compelling alternative to similarly-priced ICE vehicles.
For example, the monthly equated-monthly instalment (EMI) for a Rs 9 lakh ICE car is around Rs 25,000 (EMI for four years). And, with additional fuel and maintenance costs, it is Rs 38,000.
In contrast, the Windsor’s EMI is about Rs 29,500, excluding the battery fee.
With a battery usage fee of Rs 3.5 per km and a charging cost of Rs 1 per km, the Windsor’s total running cost for 1,500 km of driving per month amounts to approximately Rs 6,750.
Features and specifications of MG Windsor
The Windsor EV, available in three trims — Excite, Exclusive and Essence — features a 38kWh battery with prismatic cells and a front axle-mounted e-motor delivering 136bhp and 200Nm of torque.
It boasts a range of 331 km on a full charge and offers four driving modes: Eco, Eco+, Normal, and Sport.
The SUV comes with a host of modern features, including a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a fully digital driver’s display, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, and an eight-speaker sound system.
Comfort features include a panoramic glass roof, automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, and rear seats that recline up to 135 degrees.
Safety features include six airbags, a 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring, and electronic parking brakes.
E-Vroooom’s views
So, with this game-changing price and features like lifetime battery warranty, JSW MG Motor’s Windsor will eliminate almost all the worries that EV owners in India (and globally) currently have.
